Shameless Rumour Mongering

Somewhat lost in the recent Scott Rolen lovefest was the fact that J.P. mentioned repeatedly, and with more immediacy and certainty than the old: “well, we’ve got a few balls in the air and you’re always looking to improve your club” routine, that the Jays are working on a deal to improve their bench. And that means one of these guys won’t be around to hear more of Rolen’s standup routine come the start of the season.

Update: The National Post has a completely different take on what JP said. Who are you going to trust? While I would always advise the trained professional, I pinkie swear that Ricciardi never once said the words “backup” or “catcher” or “Fasasno” to Mr. Sandler. That was actually his follow-up suggestion and JP did not confirm it. Instead he shrugged kinda like: “well obviously- but while we’re at it, I’d like a pony” and moved on.

Also, J.P’s comments on the Rios contract were pretty negative and 100% just trying to brush the question off – those talks are not going anywhere right now. And do you really think that JP was such a wiener that he “expressed hope this year would continue the club’s streak of avoiding arbitration that goes back to 1997”?! He said Tallet and Frasor are close full-stop-end-of-sentence. What’s worse than shameless rumor mongering? Making real news up!

  1. If there is a trade of bench players looming I hope JP can keep his pride in check on this one and trade Scutaro instead of Mac even though he gave up two prospects for him. Mac subing in for late inning leads and starting for Halladay everytime would make an excellent bench addition. Can you imagine a healthy Halladay with an infield of Rolen, Mac, Hill and Overbay.

  2. Yeah, I hear that. Even if Scutaro was overall a significantly better player, the ability to put one of the best infield defenses of ALL TIME out there when you want to shut the game down is just too much of a weapon to pass up.

I like Scoot, but he’s just too much like Eckstein and we don’t need his ability to play the OF much. I’m sure Griffin will rip JP if he ends up giving him away but whatever…those weren’t really prospects anyway and it was a good idea at the time.
