Baby Blue

with 6 comments

As had been long-rumored, today the Jays revealed a minor change to their away uniform and a new powder-blue Jersey that will be worn for Friday home games (for full pictures and one with the Doc, check out Mike Wilner’s blog):

New Away Jersey

Grey, with numbers, a little bit of blue in a “new bold font”. Yawn. Another bland and grim uniform (at least it doesn’t look like exactly like the Rays). Check out the Tao of Stieb for more on this one and the mismatching “T”s.

New Home (Alternate) Jersey

Even Vernon looks happier! It’s just a better logo and actually looks good in the middle of a shirt. The color might be a little goofy but if you’re going to go retro, you may as well pull out all the stops. The new baby blues have a belt, but are otherwise identical to the uniforms worn in the 80’s. I think it’s possible this genture of respect could break the curse that has hung over the Jays ever since they angered their ancestors with this monstrosity:

According to Vernon Wells, the team is all for the new look:

“This is my favourite uniform. I like the old school vibe! The guys are thrilled with these uniforms. When we were presented with options, we voted to go with the powder blues – I’m glad they listened.”

Still, it’s kind of funny when your team can run around in 30-year old pajamas and still look better than the grey on grey on grey military outfits they’re wearing now. Now if we could only get B.J. Birdy out of retirement, this team could be cool again.

  2. Man, I really like what they did. This is not a huge transition, but I like that they at least responded to the will of many fans.

Jon, what has been or would be YOUR perfect uniform?

  3. You mean with one uniform or the whole thing? I’d just start over with all the classic uniforms/logos and if you can modernize that but still keep the same classic lines, ok. The mean-looking cartoon bird and sleek grey typeface with a lot of black instead of blue just looks stupid. THEY ARE NOT A FOOTBALL TEAM. Can you imagine a team like New York declaring that they had replaced their classic NYY logo with a cartoon Yankee and the same type face as the Rays??

  4. I’m with you 100% J. Just like the return to the “modern” old-tyme ballparks, great uniforms are about tradition, class, solid lines and the history of the club. Plus, we’re only a small skip and jump from the old home whites, which were always quite a sight to behold.

Does anyone know where you can get that font? Pure gold. And to pile on the nostalgia.

I can understand that as an expansion team, tradition is easily swept under the carpet for the sake of a few extra bucks at the souvenir stand. But going back to the original logo and classic look, is a great move for the organization. Enough fooling around with the “T-Bird” and any other monstrosity the PR department can dream up. I mostly feel bad for all the fans that shelled out $40 for that styleized “T” away cap. That died quicker then Correy Koskie’s Mike Sirotka’s career……..what, too soon?

Now, who’s going to have any idea what the heck that is in a couple of months? It’s clearly time to go back to the old logo and put the rest of these imitators to bed.

Oh, and let’s remember, going back to the baby blues aren’t exactly a new idea.

  6. Best cover of the whole thing here:

“The prop boy must not have been holding the cue cards high enough for Moseby to see, because instead of giving a scripted reply, he chose to ad lib: “The uniform sucked, okay? So we ain’t gonna go there.””

Also note that the “N” on Accardo’s jersey is apparently upside down. Not a good omen. Have the baseball gods been appeased for the T-Bird? Only time will tell.
