Jose Bautista Reads This Blog (or my mind)

So he’s as smart as he is talented! In a recent interview with Fox Sports, Jose Bautista put into words the very same chicken-and-egg dillemma that has fuelled 50% of my posts this year: Rogers is waiting for fans to storm back before they’ll go for it, and the fans are waiting for Rogers to go for it before they storm back.

“We have some of the most avid fans here in Toronto, not only with baseball but all sports,” Bautista said. “You saw when Vince Carter was with the Raptors, they had a packed house. You see it every single day with hockey and how passionate they are. The Leafs haven’t won since way before the Blue Jays, but they pack the house because it’s the national sport. That shows you they’re there, they’re hungry for a championship.

“If they see a sign from the front office that we’re going for it, this is it, we’re not too worried about what-ifs, it’s going to be a night-and-day difference from a fan-base standpoint. Unfortunately, it’s a chicken-or-the-egg (situation). The team would like to spend more, if they see more commitment from the fans. The fans say, ‘Make the commitment, and we’ll support you more.’ Hopefully the ice breaks soon.”

Actually, I feel kind of bad that he managed to encapsulate the whole maddening paradox in such a friendly, clear, and positive way in the space a few off-the-cuff paragraphs, while I haven’t really made it past the pointing at attendance numbers while frothing at the mouth stage. Great, now it’s going to take me all day to figure out a way to have more respect for Jose Bautista…

  3. Ditto my friend. I’m loving Bautista’s comments as well. In fact I also wrote about it my new blog Pumped Up Jays. Feel free to check it out.

  4. It’s been a long time since Harold Ballard, the Leafs’ owner who knew sports was a long-term investment. Mind you, he packed the Gardens and made his profit on popcorn . . .
