I’m guessing everyone who read Bob Elliott’s puff piece on Kyle Drabek as the next big thing called him to dish dirt on Drabek, because four days later Elliott came back with another article that made the Jays’ top pitching prospect sound like a total nutcase a la A.J. Burnett: immature, out of control, and an over-competitive douchebag.
Now, show me a 22-year-old with a million bucks and a 95 mph fastball who ISN’T a bit of an ass and I’ll show you…well…we’ll cross that bridge to fantasyland when we come to it. But when someone trying to be nice compares your personality to Dave Stieb’s, and making it through the horror of a strikeout/wild pitch without having a temper tantrum on the mound is offered as a sign of the huge mental strides you are making, it’s something to keep an eye on.
So for a less bipolar introduction to what could be a turbulent relationship with our new ace in the making, here’s a one-on-one interview someone just sent me. This is the direction baseball journalism, online or otherwise, should be going: it reads like two guys just shooting the shit, talking about ball, but with some real details thrown in for the hardcore – rather than licking his face with questions like: “hey, did you know you’re the Jays’ future?”
