Move Over, Sliced Bread

Simply a terrific post article on Halladay’s reinvention over at Mop Up Duty. Let’s not engrave Grienke’s name on the Cy Young quite yet, hmmm?

The only thing I would add is that the Doc also went through another reinvention of sorts in 2006. Probably in an attempt to prolong his career after some bouts with “tired arm”, he stopped throwing his big breaking ball as often, and probably took something off it as well. His strikeouts plummeted and people started raving about his new ‘pitching to contact’ approach but…well…he just wasn’t quite as good.

Halladay’s K/9
Year K/9
2002 6.3
2003 6.9
2004 6.4
2005 6.9
2006 5.4
2007 5.6
2008 7.5
2009 7.5

Don’t worry, he’s better now. (Than ever).

  1. Halladay on his strikeouts:

Halladay’s 206 strikeouts last year, a career high, were all but unintentional.
“Really, I try and avoid them,” he said. “My main goal is to get ahead and get balls put in play early. It wasn’t something I tried to do. But if you get ahead in the count quickly and you have a chance to put guys away, you do it.”
