The Mockingbird

Good Night

I find it hard to get swallow the yearly tradition of trying to get excited about playing spoiler as the pennant races for better teams are just starting to heat up, but Brandon League cutting through the heart of the Yankee’s lineup like a…well…99 mph sinker through the heart of the Yankee’s lineup? AMAZING. While striking out the side League topped out at 99.8 mph tonight, and apparently hit an even 100 in Fenway a couple of weeks ago- good enough for the 4th fastest pitch thrown this month. Now did anyone mention that it was one of the best sinkers in the league as well?? Ryan who?

  1. Leiter and Kay were gushing over League. Honestly, if he continues pitching like this through September and into spring training next year he should close and Ryan should pitch the 8th, regardless of salaries (and I realize that would never happen).

  2. I’m pretty sure League’s pitch was the fourth fastest in August, not the fourth fastest this season.

  3. Whups…

Yeah, that’ll never happen unless Ryan becomes a total joke, and I assume he’ll get his 1-2 mph back eventually. I don’t hate the idea of having a better setup man though, the way closers are generally misused these days. You get that situation like the Indians last year where Borowski picks up all the up-by-three slam dunks, but Betancourt enters when the game is REALLY on the line.

Ok, it’s still wrong. But less so than it might seem.

  4. We need to see more of League in a setup role before handing him the keys to the 9th. He’s been great this year, but it’s still only been two months (and really just one month of domination).

If the Jays do go into next year with a weaker rotation, then it’ll help on the non-Roy days to know the starters will only need to go 6 before League, Downs and Ryan take over.

Just keep League off the surfboard.

  5. Is there anyone in baseball with a bullpen nearly as deep as our Jays?

Accardo is capable of being a top notch setup man himself, should he ever rediscover how to throw his splitter, and then there’s Wolfe and Janssen (who I think is more of a top notch 7th inning guy when going well) still lingering around. What other teams wouldn’t give…
