Where Marcum Went?

with 10 comments

I’m sure you’re all aware of the rumblings that Shaun Marcum was sent down due to some sort of attitude problem. Well, here’s another possibility- he’s now coming from a higher arm slot (and his signature change isn’t coming from the same relative location, either). I’m no pitching coach, but that might be the sort of major thing you wanted to nip in the bud to get him back on track for next season that couldn’t be done in the majors…

Oh yeah – did I mention he doesn’t throw a cut fastball any more, either?

  1. Don’t guys usually drop down to get around a shoulder injury? What would cause him to shift his release point UP?

That’s a bit odd. Nice work to catch this!

  2. I know that guys usually drop down when their arm is hurting (or to try and get by with more movement because they don’t have the same velocity) but I think there’s generally less stress on the arm when you’re coming over the top. I’ll see if I can get someone who knows more about mechanics to comment…

  3. Nice work, Jonathon! I am so glad you returned. 🙂

  4. marcum headed into this year at 1.128 service time – had he had a full season, he’d have ended up at at least 2.130, or in otherwords, a Super2. Sending him down for a few weeks saves the Jays a couple of million for next year, and also in the subsequent years.

  5. Something occurs to me:

AJ Burnett is pitching to an FIP of 3.74 – his best since coming to Toronto thus-far.

His actual ERA, however, is 4.58 due to a very high .334 BABIP.

Now, usually you go ‘lol defense’ in these situations, but here’s the thing: Toronto has one of the best defenses in baseball.

So like … what the hell?

He’s posting a high Line Drive rate and a lower Ground Ball rate than years past, and his LOB% is a pretty bad 69.7% (thx fangraphs)

Is this all random variation or is he doing something to screw himself over this year? I honestly don’t know, and I’ve watched almost all his starts.

  6. he’d have ended up at at least 2.130, or in otherwords, a Super2.

Not a guarantee. The super-two cutoff has been above 2+130 in most of the last ten years. I’m not disputing your logic, just your certainty.

  7. Well, BABIP theory says that it’s just random variation. Pitchers don’t seem to be able to control their BABIP one way or the other, so there’s nothing he could be doing to make it that high.

But geez…I know that FB’s are MUCH more likely to go for hits, so I don’t see why that couldn’t be it.

  8. If you were looking for someone to talk about mechanics, Kyle and the other writers at Driveline Mechanics (that posted that BJ Ryan beachball pitch graph of yours a few months ago) would either know what you want to know or could point you to someone who would. Dont mean for this to be a plug or anything, but they would probably know the answer and I am interested in what it is. Anyway, address is

  9. Yeah, that’s who I was thinking. I think I have his email, just haven’t gotten around to it…

  10. […] DL. here’s what Kyle Boddy from Drive Line Mechanics had to say about what could be causing Marcum’s higher arm slot: “It’s typically the other way around – arm slot drops as injury sets in. […]
