Umps Last 2 Games

with 12 comments

So on Tuesday I’m going to do the live blogging thing and mainly abuse Rance Mulliniks, as it will be the last time I listen to him again before going all radio all the time. Last year I sorta liked him because he was just grouchy to Jamie and provided some players’ perspective. But now he just tries to predict every single pitch, deals heavily in the pop psychologizing that fills the airwaves nowaday, encourages a player to be “aggressive” at least twice an inning, and makes up ridiculous shit if he doesn’t know the answer to something.

Particularly laughable was the idea today that Jon Garland throws a “heavy” sinker, while Roy Halladay’s is just a normal sinker, due to the fact that Garland’s was natural from birth while the Doc actually had to learn how to throw his. Wanna know what the difference is between the two? Garland’s is not quite as good or as hard. Hance he doesn’t get as many ground ball outs, and isn’t as good a pitcher. Done!

One of the recurring themes on TV today was that the umpires have been garbage over the last two games. So here’s how they treated the Jays starters:

Tabbed on that last one was a pitch that Vladdy really didn’t like being called a strike, which probably was but probably isn’t called one too often- and btw, just under that is the non-call that made Burnett groove one for Rodriguez’s first home run. Anyway, all in all looks like it was in the Jays’ favour- now what I really want to see is a decent angle of that play at third in the 9th where Barajas faked Hunter off the bag and may have had him…

  1. Anyone else wonder if Stewart should have caught that ball off the bat of Vladdy?

  2. Probably…kinda hard to tell on TV though what kind of jump he got on it and where he was standing. Seemed to bounce right at his feet, but you wouldn’t want him laying out and letting it get to the wall there.

  3. I think Rowdy Rod did get Hunter there. I bet the ump was just as surprised as anyone though. I’m not sure how much that affected it.

  4. The Jays would actually have been more likely to win if they’d let the tying run score but turned the double play, but it’s awfully close. (If you don’t expect the runners to get to second and third after getting out Vlad then obviously not.)

  5. i hate mulliniks…dude tries too hard…he tries to predict everything – pitches, when runners will steal, etc. – and is usually always wrong and then offers up some lame excuse or says “well i would have…”

  6. Torgen: That’s interesting- I’ll bet nobody in or watching baseball would ever think that and go bonkers if Overbay ignored Vladdy just sitting there hung out to dry with the tying run. Not a tailor made DP, though.

  7. It’s true, there had already been a failed 3-6-1 that game, and there’s no way BJ would have expected to have to cover first, meaning it was 3-6-3 or bust, and that assumes someone covers second.

  8. I think you’re being too hard on Rance. I think it’s one of those “different flavours for different people”, I think. To me, I cannot tolerate Pat Tabler. He just says insane shit that makes go, what? Really? Stop talking. I actually feel a lot of what he says is more cliche then anything “hustles well” “plays the game hard” etc. At least Rance says logical things – be aggressive with a good pitch. Hey, at least that DOES make sense!

Rance is normally good at discussing pitch sequences and getting into a hitters head. Although yeah he might be doing it too much recently.

Although, I will give you full points for this, I said out loud to my TV “Ohh Rance, just stop talking right now” when he started talking about the heavy sinker of Mr. Garland as opposed to the (Is it a light sinker then?) sinker Halladay throws.

That was one of the first times ive heard Rance just say something totally inane.

It would have garnered way more respect from me had he said, in response to Jamies question about a heavy sinker if Rance goes “gee, I’m not really sure. I will tell you this, I don’t want to ever face anyone who throws one like Doc does, “heavy” or not.” then he can talk about how Garland throws a natural sinker or whatever the hell he wants to say.

  9. Maybe my standards are too high, because I agree that Tabler is 100x worse. And I was listening to the Yankees broadcast last night and it made Rance seem like a freaking genius. I just think he’s trying way too hard right now and anyone who talks that much ends up saying mindless things. Dead air in baseball is fiiiiiiine.

But he says “be aggressive” about EVERYTHING! In every situation. Every hitter. Every good pitch that goes by. Like if you’re not out there hacking madly at every pitch up in the zone and getting hits, hits, hits, then you’ve got some sort of psychological deficiency. Having a good approach and getting the one you want just ain’t that easy…maybe it worked for him but there are guys on our team like Eck who have made successful careers out of being super passive.

Yeah, exactly- really the problem was Jamie cornered him with an old wives tale, and Rance he was too polite or not confident enough to shoot him down/say “I don’t know”, and then talk about how some guys have natural movement on their pitches. Fletcher would have said exactly what you wrote…

  10. Where’s Fletcher been? It seems like it’s only really been Rance and Pat doing the color commentary. There’s definitely a Jays color commentary spectrum.

Dry                                                                        12 year old fan talking to us

    Rance ———————————- Fletcher ————————————- Tabler

Here’s a question for ya, how often are you watching the game on TV with a less devoted Jays fan (but still devoted… just not as obessed), and find yourself correcting something Jamie/Pat/any of them say?

But hey, Rance showed a flash of personality in a game that was approximately two weeks ago that really surprised me.

They were talking about Mexico for some reason, and Rance said something with an accent, and Jamie goes “hey, that was pretty good!” and Rance THEN said something like

“Oy, Senior Campbell!” With a crazy thick accent. I definitely laughed – authethic laughter, generated by something Rance said. Seriously. Last year, or in years prior, Rance would never have attempted anything like that. He’s getting better.

    June 3, 2008 at 2:00 pm

  11. That didn’t work at all. There were lines between Dry and 12 year old fan (they were supposed to be the opposite ends of the spectrum), with the different guys lined up below them.

  12. You’ve got to be joking. Funny Mexican Rance and I missed it?? If it was this week I would Tivo the crap out of that. Last year he wouldn’t even play along with Jamie when he was trying to be funny, you could just hear him curdling.

Fletch was only on for one series, yes? They must think he’s not authoritative enough or something.

I try (and mostly fail) to save the endless quibbling and correcting for when I’m alone because that can be just as annoying as their chatter even if you’re right. But alone, it’s almost full-blown Tourette’s- hence tonight being the last of Rance for a while…
