Adam Lind Update

with 5 comments

After he was sent down, Adam Lind continued to destroy AAA pitching- and then in the last week has completely disappeared. I don’t mean not hit. I mean disappeared, for six straight games. Wilner and the Chiefs radio say it’s something with his stomach, but geez…what kind of terrible flu sits down an athlete for an entire week?

Also strange is that when he was first asked about his absence from the lineup, J.P. said that he didn’t know what was wrong with him- and there has been no press release from the Chiefs. This is the Jays closest prospect here! Kinda makes you wonder if there’s something else going on that we don’t know or don’t want to know…

As for the other possible reasons we’re still enduring Wilkerson and Stewart (yeah, I know- he’s returned to hitting a hollow .300 like his last few seasons. Yahoo!) any longer, there’s also Lind’s contract situation. There were some rumours of the Jays wanting to avoid him becoming a “super two” (the top 16% of all players in service time are granted salary arbitration after 2 seasons), but Cot’s Contracts says he has 145 games of service time already, so if he played the next two seasons he would be a shoo-in for super-two status anyway.

It makes more sense that the Jays want to keep him below 172 games so he doesn’t get a full year of service until next season- so don’t be surprised if the Jays call up Lind for about 27 days this season (September callups don’t coun’t, btw)…

  1. If you keep Lind down to prevent him from gaining super 2 status, but then find yourself in a position where you have to move, say Brett Cecil, to get the rental bat in LF that’s necessary to stay competitive, does the club really come out ahead?

  2. If that’s the plan, it’s insane. I can’t see them trading Cecil for a rental with so few good arms in the minors, though. But I guess who else would go if they’re in the running and serious about letting Lind go for a batting title in AAA come the deadline? Sighhhhhhh. Him or Purcey.

Incidentally, if I’m right it’s already way too late to avoid Lind being a super two. The only thing left is to keep him under one year this season by calling him up in September.

  3. “Incidentally, if I’m right it’s already way too late to avoid Lind being a super two. The only thing left is to keep him under one year this season by calling him up in September.”

What does that accomplish? If I understand this super2 stuff correctly, Lind will be arbitration eligible for 4 years starting in 2011 through 2014. 2009-2010 he will make the league minimum.

  4. i think everyone would agree to call bullshit on the jays for this, if it truly is the case as to why lind is being held up…it’s pretty fuckin disheartening…

  5. I’m not sure I understand this correctly myself…but yah, I’m pretty sure if Lind played all of the next two seasons he would be a super two and get arbitration in 2011, because he would be in the top 16% of everyone with 2 years of service but less than 3.

But if they called him up for more than a month this season, in 2011 he would actually be officially in his third year of service.

So it’s not a “what year does he get arbitration” thing because that has already flown the coop. It’s a “what year is he a free agent”, which happens way down the road. So he’s being help down now so we get one more year of him for sure in 2014. Sighhhhh….
