Pulling a Buck

Back in the day when Buck Martinez was in the Blue Jays’ broadcasting booth, I became convinced that he had some mystical ability to affect the game by predicting something would happen, the exact opposite of which would occur at some point in the next 10 seconds. It wasn’t so much that Buck was wrong all the time, as that the fates had some sort of vested interest in making him look foolish whenever he tried to invoke a little authority.

“This guy is 1-46 against Timlin over his- CRACCCCCKKKKKK”

“He’s one of the toughest guys to strike out in the game” *whiff* *whiff* *whiff*

“You know, I’d make a really great manager” *SPLAT*

You get the idea…”Pulling a Buck” became a catchphrase for being proven instantly and dramatically wrong (e.g. “In 35 years I’ve never had an accident”, “Don’t worry, I’m sterile”, etc). Anyway, here’s a classic Buck from this week- after an error to blow the game and while demonstrating zero ability to bunt a curveball, Jeff Brantley was pretty sure Edwin Encarnacion should not be at the plate…:
