The Jays just got more……Squirrely??

with 6 comments

EckDid you know, when you type “squirrely” into Google, this is the third thing that comes up. I really thought a picture of Reed Johnson would be first, but I digress.

Everyone’s favorite Ken is reporting this morning that the Jays have reached a preliminary agreement with David Eckstein on a 1-year, $4.5 million contract.

Now I’m not going throw up links to all the Jays fans who have been bemoaning this signing for the past 48 hrs or so. Yes he’s old. Yes he’s injury prone. Yes his defense not as good as the Prime Minister of Defense. And he didn’t get signed today to a $275 million contract.

But he does get on base at a decent clip:

Jays’ Leadoff Hitters last Season: .247/.321/.407

David Eckstein last Season: .309/.356/.382

For 1 year and a minor commitment of cash, I’ll take it. Someone grab a discount card at the cleaners, we now have the dirtiest team in the league.

  1. I love it…the Jays replace one hugely-overrated fan favourite with another. You nailed this one. In today’s market this was a downright steal (he was rumoured around 3/21) and we are so freaking desperate for a leadoff hitter and there’s one super-obvious place we could put one. Anyone who doesn’t like this pickup has fallen asleep in front of a sportscenter highlight reel one too many times and/or doesn’t understand how much an OBP < .280 hurts the team.

  2. I’m pretty lukewarm on Eckstein. Sure, we needed a shortstop that can hit more than Gibby’s weight, but it’s hard to get too excited about a guy who throws like me out there.

This signing is kinda like Debbie Gibson in Playboy. It’s like, yeah she’s naked and everything, but really, who gives a crap.

  3. First off, dollar for dollar, a good deal.

Eckstein is one of the best free agents SS on the market, and also costs us zero draft picks.

I think a well used defensive/offensive platoon could be fantastic for us, especially our GB pitchers (the Doc). It’s not like we just married the guy, more like a drunken one-night stand.

  4. […] The Drunks swore. Tao of Stieb was sarcastic as hell. Wilner exploded in question marks. I guess we grudgingly condoned it. Unfortunately the team’s incumbent underdog shortstop isn’t getting the same ruthless, […]

Wow, somewhere deep inside I feel like he’s mocking my post above and I love it.

  6. Yours is different since you didn’t google his name…just squirrely.

But if google “David Eckstein squirrely” then you only get 46 hits, and guess which site comes first.
