It’s nice to see that Barry Bonds hasn’t been intimidated by the pressure of the media, courts, fans throwing syringes, all that. In fact, he’s feeling so relaxed and confident on his way to passing the record that he’s passing out moral advice and taking shots at the guy whose record he is breaking! Just listen to him take the moral high ground during the all-star game when asked why he, unlike Aaron, will be in attendance when A-Rod he inevitably breaks his soon to be all-time home run record:

That’s what you’re supposed to do. If we don’t stick together, you know, who’s going to stick together with us. We have to stick together as ballplayers, you know. It used to be, you know, the boy’s club. You know, we used to have this fraternity and a little bit has been broken. And we as ballplayers need to get that fraternity back and stick together. Because it is about us and this is what we do, and it’s about the fans too, coming to the game, but that fraternity should last forever.

So even though Hammerin’ Hank has repeatedly said he just doesn’t think baseball is about records and doesn’t want the attention (just as he didn’t during his own chase); even though he has repeatedly declined to say anything disparaging about Barry’s bulging BALCO biceps, Bonds has decided to preach to him snidely on the biggest stage there is about how baseball players should conduct themselves (while publicly saying “Hank, if you want to stay home, stay home, brother.“). At least he practices what he preaches- that is pretty much the way an arrogant, ignorant, drunken meathead frat boy would behave as he’s defacing a piece of history.

  1. Not to mention that Hammerin’ Hank is 73, and probably not up to travelling around following a team on a ML schedule.

And I can imagine what will happen if he breaks the record NOT in San Fran. It’ll be a gong show. I don’t think if I was Aaron I would want any part of the Bonds sideshow.

  2. That’s what Barry conceded the last time he mentioned Aaron:

“It could go on for weeks. You expect this man to travel across the entire continent for weeks? It’s not fair to him.”

But then he decided to talk out of the side of his mouth like anyone doesn’t know what he’s referring to- heck , Tim freaking MCGRAW thought it was blatant.

I wonder if there’s any park where he would be actively booed if he broke the record? I’m sure there will be at least some signs and props. I sure would do that if it was here.

  3. OMG, can you imagine if he did it in Milwaukee?!? They would likely throw rocks at him as he rounded the bases (or as in Chuck Knoblauch’s case, handfuls of change). I think the Giants actually have a trip to see the Brewers in the near future, but at the pace Barry is going I don’t think its much of a worry.

Or LA, apparently Dodger’s fans absolutely dispise him. And I think he’s got a reasonable shot to do it there.

But since the Giants are pretty much out of it, they can probably be creative with his playing time so he does it at home. The only place he won’t be booed.
