Rios Close

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Jays are close to re-signing Alex Rios for 6 years/65 million dollars. Talk about taking it down to the wire, since the team announced they would not be negotiating with Rios during the season.

If those numbers are right, that’s a steal for the Jays. The first two are just arbitration years, but then the Jays would buy out his age 29-32 prime seasons, at around 12 million dollars a year. That’s well below what his value will be on the free agent market even if he doesn’t continue to bloom at age 27-28; most of the better outfielders in the league make that already. And consider that by then Vernon Wells will be making 21 million!
