Russ Adams, World’s Greatest September Callup
Honest to god, I very nearly wet myself last night when Russ Adams unleashed his Grand Salami on Jonathan Papelbon and avenged his little running mishap at 3rd. Either way, in my excitement, I managed to spray the majority of my delicious Labatt 50 all over my lane at the Playtime Bowl . It was better then finding this beautiful record at a Sunday afternoon garage sale. The odds of something like that ever happening again are about as likely as this ever happening again (thanks Hammer).
I had visions of posting something more substantial, but after that home run I could only think of one thing: Russ Adams is the greatest September callup of all time!
Just check his numbers three years ago, and again this season (you just have to conveniently forget the small sample size and everything that happened in between – it isn’t difficult, I blame TV):
| Year | G | AB | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | CS | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
| 2004 | 22 | 72 | 10 | 22 | 2 | 1 | 4 | 10 | 1 | 0 | 5 | 5 | .306 | .359 | .528 |
| 2007 | 19 | 33 | 10 | 11 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 9 | 1 | 1 | 7 | 7 | .344 | .450 | .576 |
Don’t you all remember praising JP on his fine draft pick who was clearly the second coming of Roberto Alomar?!? Well I did, and it’s only taken 3 years to finally get some sweet satisfaction - and man is it good. I’m pratically in flavour country here. So don’t despair when Russ is back in AAA next year – he’s the secret weapon we’ve got in our back pocket when the playoffs come knocking.

Oh great…we haven’t been to the playoffs in 14 years and we’ve got Mr. September rather than Mr. April-August. You forgot to mention he’s also been playing gold glove defense. Although I remember a throw from second that sailed into the dugout…what happened on that play to make it not an error?!
And do you think there’s any chance this grand slam breaks Papelbon’s brain Pujols/Lidge style??
I would forgive Russ all those wasted years that happened to paps.
Oh, and I almost want to make another post just to celebrate hitting it off this “glare” because it’s possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.
Well after demolishing Boston’s set-up man and closer on consecutive evenings, I’d say the sky’s the limit for ol’ Russy.
Haha, that glare is great mocking material - what has he been taking cues from Mr. Burns?
Russ at the plate has nearly single-handedly allowed us to play spoiler to the sox’s choice of playoff slots - whoever wins the East will get 4 days off vs. two. Its a small consolation, but I really really hate the Red Sox.
Go new curse!
Ah, the annual September ritual in Toronto…cheering against other teams in our division that have made the playoffs. Go Cleveland! Then the Angels! And then whoever has the smallest payroll win the world series!
Go Not Boston!
Go Not Yankees!
That sounds good to me.
